Are milk production and dairy farming really worthwhile in India?

Opportunities:
Since milk has become a basic food necessity, the demand for milk production seems to be on an infinite curve. The changing food habits, and the shining prosperity of our country, have made milk a go-to drink choice. We cannot imagine a single day without consuming a glass of milk, can we? The competitive willingness in the dairy sector will define the growth of this industry in India. The creation of cold chain infrastructure along with a backward chain integration has become the focal point of dairy businessmen. Since, you and I live in a “modern” world, making the farmers a part of the organised chain of deliverables should not be a tough task. Thanks to the co-operative and private sectors, the milk production industry is booming in our country.

Challenges:

1. Production cost
The rising demand for milk production has made countries with low costs of production rich in terms of production statistics. If India wants to remain the top producer, efforts need to be made to reduce the cost of production. The production, processing, and marketing fields of these sectors need to remain in focus which demands a good budget. International Quality can be achieved if we focus on such factors and thus India will have a hold on exporting milk and milk products to other countries as well.

2. Infrastructure
We need help in terms of cooling facilities that can prevent the contamination of milk at the base level i.e. villages. If we succeed in achieving this, no one can stop India from becoming the white medalists. The government and private sectors need to intervene in this section and make a huge chunk of investment that can help us in boosting our milk-production capacity.

3. Animal Health
Animal healthcare should not be neglected while having the mission to be a global producer. Diseases should be detected at a very early stage that can prevent a health mishap from occurring. Green fodder and good quality of food should be provided to the herd in order to avoid health complexities amongst our animals.

4. Retailers
With the surge in healthy products, the demand for milk has gone up. Just-in-time inventory management is required by the retailers in order to meet the demand and supply of milk and milk products in India. The marketing and pricing of milk-related products should be done in such a manner that the demand remains unaffected. Hygiene might remain as a challenge which should never be ignored, at any cost.

Conclusion:
Given the rise in demand, one should definitely make a plunge in the milk-production sector of India. If the above-mentioned challenges are given an eye, this can turn into a profitable business area.
